TWINNING ACTIVITY “LET’S MAKE UP DIVERSITY”

Description

The activity “Let’s make up diversity” mainly consists in the twinning of a group of young people with a role model from a cultural community. Interested young people must form a committee and organize a conference during which the role model will talk about his or her career, social implications and accomplishments.
The team of the R.I.R.E 2000 Centre will support the youth committee and help it with the logistic side of conference planning. The Centre will also help establish communications between the committee and the role model.

The Issue

The face of Quebec’s society is evolving into a more multiethnic one. Unfortunately, immigrants are still seen as outcasts and associated with deprivation, even though Quebec and Canada count many people from cultural communities who have contributed in their own way to the social and political expansion of the country.

It is important to keep in mind the fact that schools in which students from diverse origins experience discrimination and exclusion are suppose to be places where respect and tolerance are taught. That’s the reason why R.I.R.E 2000 is involved in activities pertaining to awareness and promotion of cultural diversity in schools. The cultural twinning will provide students with an opportunity to hear the testimony of a person from a cultural community who contributed to the furthering of a better Quebec.

Objectives of the activity

Activity pertaining to Intercultural coming together & twinning aim to :

  • Pique young people’s interest and get them to know certain members of cultural communities who, through their work and their actions, contribute every day to the development of Quebec’s society;

  • Help young people discover all the richness of cultural diversity in our society;

  • Open an enlightened dialogue on cultural diversity and racism.

This project was made possible with the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage through Canadian Culture Online
